Abstract:

[p. 343] According to certain historians, the arrival of the American squadron in the Aegean during the Greek War of Independence proves definitely the interest of the American government in the case of Greece, and is closely related to the philhellenic movement developed during that period of time in the U.S. known as Greek Fever. On the other hand, an opposing point of view says that the American presence in the Aegean served exclusively the commercial interests of the U.S. in the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea. Consequantly, it had nothing to do at all with the Greek War of Independence and the philhellenic feelings of the American people.
