Abstract:[63] Although Mark Philips became one of Manchester's first two M.P.s in 1832, the town already had parliamentary representative from 1812 to 1830-Mark's cousin Sir George Philips who sat as a radical whig for two pocket boroughs. Sir George was the prominent Mancunian of the early 19th century in terms of his business standing, wealth and political influence.
